In 1515 conqueror Don Diego Velazquez founded the village of Santiago de Cuba in one of the most secure bays of the island. The continuous migration flow from other parts of the Cuban archipelago turned Santiago the Cuba into the most "Caribbean" city within Cuba.
Santiago de Cuba is the second largest province of Cuba and it is surely the most exotic one. It is commonly known as the "cradle of the Revolution" and is very popular thanks to the famous hospitality shown by its people.
Santiago is an important religious center. Here you will find the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre) ("Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre", Patroness of Cuba) one of the most popular pilgrimage sites.
Santiago is the second province of Cuba in terms of population density. Until mid 16th century here was the official residence of the Spanish governor. The port of Santiago de Cuba was one of the most important entry points for immigrants arriving from the Old World. In 1898 the Spanish fleet was defeated by US forces. This event marked the withdrawal of the Spanish army from the island and the beginning of the US rule.
In this city are many tourist attractions such as: the museum of ethnography "La Isabelica" located at the castle once owned by the conqueror of Cuba Diego Velazquez de Cuellar; the Emilio Bacardi municipal museum; the Moncada Barracks and La granjita Siboney, where the Cuban revolutionary forces gathered under the guidance of Fidel Castro. Another place of interest is the Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (San Pedro de la Roca Castle), which was listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
During your stay in Santiago de Cuba you will have the possibility of enjoying the famous Cuban Carnival. This local celebration, a display of bright colors and music, is commonly held on the second half of July.
